What to know
Words are counted as whitespace-separated groups. Characters are Unicode code points, so a combined emoji may count as several characters. This is not a language-aware word segmenter.

Yes, in the total character count. A separate count excludes whitespace.
How are blank lines handled?
Line breaks separate lines, including blank lines. Empty input produces zero lines.
